Choosing the right setting for Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy can feel overwhelming. Should therapy take place at home, in a specialised centre, or a combination of both? At Dynamics, we understand that every family is unique. As such, the best approach would be the one that fits your needs, goals, family context, and family’s daily routines.
Home-based ABA therapy takes place in a familiar setting. This setting is ideal for individuals who may feel anxious in new environments, or who need to work on functional life skills (i.e. making meals, showering, folding clothes, etc.). Its effectiveness can depend on factors like available space, set up, potential distractions, and safety considerations.
Pros:
- High caregiver involvement: Therapy takes place in the natural environment, allowing caregivers to be actively involved, learn strategies firsthand, and consistently support progress throughout daily routines.
- Real-life generalisation: Skills are taught where they are naturally used, such as self-care routines, mealtime skills, and household chores.
Cons:
- Limited socialisation: Individuals may have fewer opportunities to interact with peers.
- Limited structure and distractions: Home settings have many distractors (i.e. siblings, television, etc.) which can make it harder for an individual to focus quickly especially when first starting therapy.
Whilst home-based ABA is recommended for some individuals, Dynamics Behaviour Analysis recommends all new clients to start with at least 1 month of center-based therapy to build comfort and trust with our therapists, prior to any shifts to the home-setting. All probes can also be conducted in the centre in order to finalise their individualised program. As therapy shifts home, we can then address challenges directly in their natural environment.
Centre-based ABA therapy occurs at a specialised facility, providing structured sessions with a team of therapists and opportunities to interact with peers.
Pros:
- Social opportunities: opportunities to interact with peers are present, allowing the individual to practice communication and social skills in a natural group setting.
- Better for early learners: The highly structured centre environment supports skill acquisition, school readiness, and focused learning for young children or individuals who are easily distracted..
- Collaborative team approach: Families benefit from input from multiple therapists (SLT, OT, ET) working together.
- Materials and Resources : All necessary materials and resources to run the program are present. No wait time to acquire materials compared to the home setting.
Cons:
- Transition stress: Some individuals may feel anxious leaving home and adjusting to new environments.
- Less functional context: Skills are practiced in a structured centre setting, which may not always translate directly to daily home routines.
Centre-based ABA is recommended for some individuals. These would be newer learners, learners who engage with inappropriate behaviors, learners who require the school readiness skill aspects, and learners who require the multi disciplinary team approach.
At Dynamics, we offer a hybrid model that combines the strengths of both home-based and centre-based ABA therapy. Families can enjoy:
- Personalised home-based sessions for teaching daily living skills, targeting behaviours that are context-specific to home, and supporting individuals who experience high anxiety in unfamiliar environments.
- Centre-based sessions for school readiness, structured learning, developing instructional control, social skills with peers, and access to multi-disciplinary resources.
- Flexible scheduling that fits your family’s lifestyle, making therapy more sustainable and less stressful.
This flexible approach ensures benefits from both the comfort and familiarity of home, and the structure, social exposure, and specialist resources of a centre, while parents and caregivers receive guidance and support to reinforce learning across settings.
Choosing What Works for Your Family
Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best approach depends on personality, family schedule, and therapy goals. While centre-based therapy helps individuals learn new skills in a structured environment, home-based therapy ensures they can apply these skills in real-life situations. At Dynamics, we partner with families at every stage of their ABA journey, providing guidance to select the right setting to maximise growth.
